Itinerary Tips for visiting Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world having been founded by William the Conquerer in the 11th century! Providing an awe-inspiring backdrop to the quaint village of the same name this is an attraction well worth the trip out of London. You may also want to consider doing a river cruise to explore the picturesque surroundings.

Important Things to Know

  • To get there you can either catch the train from Paddington to Slough and then catch a train from Slough to  Windsor & Eton Central alternatively you can catch a direct train from Waterloo via Putney/Richmond to Windsor/Eton Riverside.
  • Saturdays can be very busy at Windsor, so if going on this day we suggest getting there early
  • Lego Land is nearby if travelling with young children.
  • If travelling on a Friday during summer you can do a tour (needs to be pre booked) of the world famous Eton College a short distance from the Castle. The tours last for 90 minutes and commence at 2pm and 4pm.
  • A trip to Windsor Castle could be mixed in quite well with visiting Twickenham Stadium or Kew Gardens. If doing so we recommend spending an evening in Richmond. You would need to catch the train to/from Windsor Eton Riverside to Waterloo.
  • Twickenham Stadium you would get off at Twickenham Station and it is about a 10-15 minute walk to the stadium from the ground. You can do a tour of the stadium and visit their museum.
  • Kew Gardens is two stops from Richmond on the District Line. It is at Richmond where you can get the train direct to/from Windsor-Eton Riverside.
  • London Pass gets you into Windsor Castle (£23) extra value can be had if also visiting Twickenham Stadium (£25) or Kew Gardens (£18) on the way back.
