London is an excellent city to develop a marketing career with many of the world’s biggest companies boasting a presence in the city and more than 600 marketing agencies based in the capital.
It can be worth looking at all the channels (Advertised Jobs/Jobsites, Recruitment Agencies, Approaching Companies Direct, Networking/Social Media) to find the marketing work you want.
Less experienced marketing candidates and those looking to start a marketing career are likely going to need to take a more proactive approach but you should still use all channels available. Advertised roles may have a high level competition, however, they are still worth applying for if you meet the criteria. Marketers like using social media to help fill vacancies as it means they don’t have to pay the hiring costs that come with recruitment agencies and advertising so research the companies you could be interested in working for and follow them online through their social media pages.
Always be positive opportunities will open up.
Both senior and junior marketing candidates should place their CV online with Reed, Monster, CV Library, Total Jobs and Jobsite.
Only Marketing Jobs and Simply Marketing Jobs are specialist job boards worth registering with.
Guardian, Marketing Week and the Gumtree will also advertise London based marketing jobs.
For Starters try the following marketing recruitment agencies:
Stop Gap, Ashdown Group, MarketingRecruitmentAgency.com, Adam Recruitment, Blue Skies, EMR
Sourcing more agencies:
Try the job sites listed above, Google or do a search on the REC website (Recruitment Employment Confederation)
Other agencies:
By placing your CV online there is a good chance that recruitment agencies and employers may contact you for positions that they are currently looking to fill. A lot of commercial agencies will get marketing roles in even though don't specialise in this area.
- Make sure you have a complete and up to date profile on Linkedin. If actively looking don’t be afraid to say so on Linkedin with mobile number listed and visible so potential recruiters/employers can easily contact you.
- Join Twitter/facebook/Linkedin pages of companies you would like to work for as they will often advertise vacancies on these pages. (see below tip of researching potential companies to work for)
- Look at social media pages relevant to your community e.g. Kiwis in London on facebook, your university facebook page etc.
- Industry exhibitions can be a good way of developing your network and meeting people in the industry. Check the NEC, Olympia and Excel Exhibition websites to see if they have any relevant exhibitions that could be worth attending and help you meet people. Also do a online search for specific exhibitions relevant to yourself. Exhibition lists can act as a directory of possible companies to contact.
- Join groups on LinkedIn.
- Use Linkedin to find the right people to speak to at a company who will hire for the roles you seek. Don’t be afraid to contact them and express your interest for certain work and ask if they have any suggestions to getting this type of work. If they don’t have any roles they are in the industry so may have a contact that does.
Companies like candidates who approach them direct as it shows a genuine interest in working for their organisation and it also means they incur no agency fees or advertising costs incurred in hiring someone.
Source companies to approach direct using the following methods:
Search engines use to source relevant companies you may wish to work for. Look up exhibitions that may have occurred recently as they may list an exhibitor list of companies that could be relevant. Association bodies are also a good source to find a relevant directory of companies.
Linkedin has a company search facility where you can search industry, company size and location giving you a prospective list of companies to approach.
London Reference Library Is an excellent resource to source potential businesses in a industry with access to the Experian and other useful databases. You may need a memory stick to save a excel spreadsheet of relevant businesses to contact.
